Valentino Rossi has said on Twitter that The Daily Telegraph’s story reporting his plan to retire at the end of this season is untrue: “I have no intention of retiring at the end of the year, it’s just an invented story” he said.
The Telegraph claimed the news came from sources very close to Rossi, but now the man himself says he is not retiring at the end of 2012 that’s the whole story torpedoed. Good news for MotoGP fans, bad for the Telegraph's credibility.
It does still leave open the question of what Rossi will do next year, especially as this is chief mechanic Jerry Burgess’s last season. It seems unlikely Rossi will be able to get a ride again with a top level factory team other than Ducati – the chances of returning to Honda or Yamaha are at best remote – yet if nothing can be done to gel Rossi with the Demosedici he might have to resign himself to another season of midfield finishes.
An intriguing alternative, and one which has been aired previously, is for Rossi to set up his own satellite team, and if this is the case, it could be the source of the retirement rumours. Sounds more like someone invented it though.
